Do Cat Window Perches Really Stay Up? A Mounting Guide
Share
Short answer: yes, a suction-cup cat window perch stays up well when it's mounted on clean, smooth glass and checked once in a while. When a perch does come down, the cause is usually where or how it was mounted, not the cups themselves. This guide walks you through mounting one so it stays put.
Cats love windows for good reason. A window gives them sunshine, warmth and a steady stream of birds, squirrels and passing cars to watch. A window perch turns a narrow sill into a real seat, without drilling holes in your walls or window frame.
Why suction cups let go
Suction cups hold by keeping air out from under them. Anything that lets air back in weakens the hold. The usual causes:
- Dirty glass. Dust, grease and cleaner residue all leave tiny gaps.
- The wrong surface. Textured, frosted or patterned glass, window film, painted frames and wood won't seal. Suction cups need smooth, flat glass.
- Crossing a seam. A cup that sits across the edge of the glass, a frame or a divider can't seal properly.
- Stiff cups. Cold cups are less flexible and don't press flat against the glass.
- Temperature swings. Windows get hot in afternoon sun and cold at night. Condensation can creep under the edge of a cup over time.
How to mount a cat window perch
- Pick the right pane. Choose one large, smooth sheet of glass that won't be opened. Double-pane windows are fine. Avoid sliding panes you use often, since opening them puts stress on the cups.
- Plan the height. Mount the perch low enough that your cat can jump up easily from the sill, a chair or a piece of furniture. A lower perch is easier to reach, and the drop is short if a cup ever lets go.
- Clean the glass well. Use glass cleaner, then wipe again with plain water and a lint-free cloth to remove any residue. Let it dry completely.
- Soften the cups. Soak the suction cups in hot water for a few minutes, then dry them. Warm cups are more flexible and seal better.
- Press from the center out. Press each cup firmly, pushing out any trapped air. On a cup with a locking lever, flip the lever to lock it.
- Wait before the first use. Give the cups at least 10 minutes to settle before your cat jumps on.
- Test it yourself. Press down firmly on the perch with your hand. It shouldn't slide or tilt.
Keep it secure over time
- Check the cups every few weeks. Look for cups that are lifting at the edges. Press them back down or remount them.
- Remount when the seasons change. Big temperature shifts, such as the first cold snap in fall, are a good time to take the perch down, clean the glass and remount it.
- Respect the weight limit. Check the rated load on your perch and count every cat that might pile on at once.
- Wash the fabric. A clean bed stays more inviting, and you'll notice loose cups while you're at it.
Getting your cat to use it
Many cats take to a window perch right away, but some need a nudge.
- Put the perch on the window your cat already likes most, usually the sunniest one or the one with the best view of birds.
- Lay a favorite blanket or a T-shirt you've worn on it, so it smells familiar.
- Place a few treats on the perch, or use a wand toy to lead your cat up.
- Give it time. Some cats watch a new perch for a few days before trying it.
One perch or two?
In a multi-cat home, a single perch can turn into a daily argument. A double-deck perch gives two cats their own spot at the same window. The Pawables Window Lounge comes in single-deck and double-deck versions. It mounts with suction cups, has a breathable, machine-washable mesh bed, and is rated for up to 50 lb.
